The future of retail jobs is bright. Jobs in this industry, which employs thousands of people in both hourly and managerial positions, are expected to grow 8 percent over the 200818 decade, which is about as fast as the average for all occupations, the Bureau of Labor and Statistics reports.

Given the size of this occupation, about 374,700 new retail salesperson jobs will arise over the projections decade. This is more jobs than will be generated in almost any other occupation, according to the BLS.

Because there is constantly people leaving opportunities in the retail industry, the job outlook is optimistic. These jobs are ideal for both young and old, including youth, college students, middle-aged, and elderly people. Flexible hours and the opportunity to work any number out of seven days a week makes jobs in retail favorable over other industries.

Retail is a broad word that encompasses basically the industry that thrives off the selling of goods and services to people. Everything from clothes to shoes to electronics to toys can be purchased in the retail industry. It is an industry that is also extremely sensitive to the economy, so if people are not dipping into their wallets to purchase goods, it will be difficult for the retail industry to recover.

During the recession when money was tight, thousands of people in retail lost their jobs. But the past year showed that consumer spending is up, and so are jobs. Many stores, including home improvement outlets, are reportedly hiring thousands for the spring season rush.

Other stores are hiring people to replenish their shelves, check out customers, and manage staff.

An important aspect of a retail jobs involves conducting financial transactions. Cashiers ring up purchases and take payments by cash, check, debit, or credit card. They check IDs to ensure the transaction is done by the proper person. They open and close the cash registers and balance the drawer at the end of the night.

They also separate and count charge slips, coupons, and exchange vouchers and make deposits at a cash office. Because of these transactions, it’s very important that the retail employee be honest and dependable.

Jobs in retail typically involve working Monday through Friday or on the weekends during a 9-9 time frame. They may work in the mornings, midmornings, afternoon, or evenings. Typically on Sunday the hours are less if the store is open.

Retail employees work in brightly-lit, comfortable, clean spaces. They may bend and lift boxes, pick items up off the floor, move clothes racks around, help customers lift heavy items into their car. They must also stand for long periods of time, which can place a strain on the back. However this can also be an advantage to many people who prefer standing than sitting for long periods of time.

Jobs in retail may involve working outdoors in the sun and rain, selling plants, flowers, or cars. They will sell everything from books, cheese, wine, flowers, toys, cell phones, music, albums, purses, jewelry, gems, and shoes. The opportunities in retail are unlimited.

During peak sales periods the number of hours a person in retail works may go up. They may spend several hours pulling clothes from stockrooms and organizing the floor. Pulling clothes on mannequins, pulling electronics from boxes, wiping down screens, and cleaning floors are other job duties.

Taking a vacation during peak vacation times if you work in the retail industry can be difficult. You may be asked to limit your vacation during these times so that the store you work for can have every employee at their disposal. Taking a vacation during off-peak times is preferable.
