Need Helps To Relieve Stress? Try Cooking!

If you’re under a mountain of stress, and you need some helps for relief from stress, try cooking. Maybe at first you don’t see the connection – how can cooking help with stress relief? Isn’t a massage better? Or having a lot of money? But think about it. Cooking helps with stress relief in many ways.

Just Something To Do

For some people, the act of working with the food and creating something people will enjoy eating is a stress reliever. Cooking helps relieve stress and relaxes people by taking their mind away from the stresses they’ve been consumed by. Haven’t you noticed that when your hands are busy and you have to focus on something else – this case, measuring and mixing – that it is harder to ruminate about the struggles you’re having?

Helping Others Helps Us

Another way that cooking helps relieve stress is that often we cook for others. Experts have known for ages that one way to relieve our own stress and worries is to help someone else – cooking is the perfect way to help others! Whether it is making a dinner for someone who has an extra stress (new baby, health issues, moving, etc.) or making a cake for a celebration (birthday, graduation, anniversary, etc.) cooking for others can relieve your own stress.

Consider the impact of surprising someone else with something you’ve cooked. Has someone helped you lately? Or impressed you? Or been an influence for good in your life? Maybe you should cook them a loaf of homemade pumpkin bread or banana bread! The excitement you feel as you anticipate their reaction will add to the stress relief while you cook.

Comfort Food – Appropriately Named

What do you think of as comfort food? For many people, it is a food that they had as a child, probably something their mother made. It usually brings back warm fuzzy memories of snuggling with their mom and being with family. Even just the scent of the food can induce comfort – that’s why “apple pie spice” candles sell so well.

Common comfort foods are mashed potatoes, chicken noodle soup, or tuna noodle casserole. Also, homemade bread with butter and freezer stored strawberry jam is the perfect comfort food that heralds of home for many of us. Note that though there are many ways to make each of these, usually the way Mom made it is “best” and is the version we consider a comfort food. If you want to use cooking to help relieve stress, try making a comfort food.
